Açai cultivation project

In the new SANTE products, açai is the main active ingredient and is used the most frequently - namely, exactly 14 times. Which is why we’ve decided
to support a non-commercial project with the purchase of this raw material:
an açai cultivation project in Brazil.

On the initiative of Rainer Welke (founder of Davertmühle), Amazon Organic, the açai-growing project, was up and running in 2005 already with several cooperatives near Belém / Brazil, in the Federal State of Pará.

Currently, there are five cooperatives involved in the work, consisting of about 15 to 20 families in each, who own between 0.5 and 1.5 hectares of Amazon forest. The small-scale farmers are advised on a regular basis by an agricultural engineer on the economic management of organic farming, so that the know-how of cultivation and harvesting methods which protect the environment is promoted.

In close cooperation with the local chamber of agriculture in Cenhar, social programmes in the areas of education and health are developed and continuously extended for the local cooperatives.

Açai palm trees are, incidentally, ideally adapted to the climatic conditions of the northern Amazon Basin. Through the açai’s cultivation in mixed cultures, the earth becomes part of a sustainable farming method, and the previous all too common forest clearance and exploitative destruction of the land are reduced. Via the project, the farmers receive a higher price for their certified organically grown produce than they would get for conventional produce, which is why they are very strongly motivated to implement the new methods.

The berries are harvested carefully by hand, and taken by boat immediately afterwards to a certified organic partner company of the project, very close to the cooperatives, where they are processed. So that the precious ingredients don’t get lost, the oil that we use for our SANTE products is pressed directly on-site and subsequently shipped to Germany. Naturally, the whole process is monitored continuously, and samples of the raw and finished products are tested in detailed analyses, in order to ensure a high quality of the raw material. The project and the goods are certified by the IBD (Instituto Biodinamico), corresponding to the full extent of the European organic criteria.

By supporting the Amazon Organic açai project, SANTE promotes the sustainable use of the açai palm trees, thus helping the small-scale farmers in the cooperatives to secure a living and to preserve their natural living environment.
In this way, we contribute to protecting the unique ecosystem of the tropical rain forest, and to stabilizing the ecological and social balance in the Amazon Delta.
